Madeleine specialises in Environmental and Resource Management Law. Madeleine studied Law and Political Studies at Otago University and Prague’s Charles University. Prior to joining Berry Simons she worked in the Resource Management team at a large Auckland firm and then spent four years running the litigation and advocacy, and climate change programmes for a not-for-profit environmental NGO.
“Knowing your client is the key to success. More often than not, there is a solution available that works for your client, is acceptable to interested parties, and which is good for the environment. To find that solution you need to understand your clients business, and have the experience to understand the perspective of the other parties involved. You also need to know the law intimately and be able to be creative. Berry Simons understands that you need all of these to be successful and approaches things accordingly. In my experience, not many people do.”
Madeleine has broad litigation and negotiation experience, appearing in appellate Court’s of all levels as well as the Environment Court, and negotiating national policy through collaborative processes. She has acted in a number of precedent-setting decisions relating resource management and fisheries matters. She is equally comfortable acting for applicant’s, submitters, iwi or government, and her broad experience helps her to find develop workable, pragmatic solutions that meet her clients needs.
