Consent granted for Peachgrove Development

Thu Oct. 31st 2024

A fast-track panel has approved consent to construct a mixed-use development in Hamilton East.

Sue Simons and Olivia Gunn have successfully obtained resource consent under the COVID-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020 for the Peachgrove Mixed-Use Precinct. The decision will see the development of 170 new dwellings, a 128-room hotel, a commercial gym and a dairy in Hamilton East.

The decision marks a positive step for urban growth in Hamilton, contributing significantly to the region's housing and commercial infrastructure. The additional employment generation and economic benefits will also contribute to New Zealand’s recovery from the economic and social impacts of COVID-19.

Despite the Panel receiving comments citing concerns about the project, including in relation to noise and vibration effects, engineering, archaeological protocols, identification of adjacent landowners, the need for future regional consents, and, the extent of the outdoor living spaces and flooding, the project received support from the Hamilton City Council and other commentors.

The conditions of consent were largely agreed with the Council, with additional amendments made to enhance clarity and address the concerns of the invited commenters.

The Panel concluded that the development aligns with planning provisions despite some minor height and urban intensity exceedances for the General Residential Zone and that any effects could be appropriately avoided, remedied, or mitigated through conditions.

Sue says, “This project represents the very proposal the Fast-track process was designed for – all positives!”
