Consent has been successfully obtained for a new "coastal resort" retirement village development in Orewa following a hearing in March.


Berry Simons’ Partner, Sue Simons, has successfully obtained consent for a new retirement village development in Orewa following a hearing in March.

The developer sought consent for a 109 unit residential retirement development, a variety of common facilities, together with restoration of a historic cottage and work to improve public access to a nearby stream.

The Applicant’s brief to its architects was for a high-quality retirement apartment complex with a New Zealand “coastal resort” character. The proposal was opposed by a number of submitters had some unique site constraints, meaning a careful iterative design approach was necessary to achieve a positive outcome.We worked with the Applicant at all stages of the village’s design to achieve a consentable development that was both commercially viable and sensitive to its surroundings.

The Commissioners agreed that all of the effects of the proposal had been adequately avoided, remedied or mitigated by the applicant and that the proposal would have a number of positive effects, including the provision of a form of living that would meet the community’s future needs.

The application was heard in March, with a decision issuing on 20 April 2018.
